August 30, 2011...(Orleans, MA) – State Representative Sarah K. Peake (Democrat-4th Barnstable District), delivered fifteen sackpacks containing essential school supplies to the Homeless Prevention Council office at 14 Old Tote Road, Orleans, as part of the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) 2011 National Backpack Program.
“This is an extremely meaningful program,” said Peake. “I am honored to have the opportunity to present these sackpacks to deserving students. As we have seen the economy fluctuate over the last year, many parents have struggled to figure out how they will be able to purchase supplies for their children. As another school year begins, public-private partnerships like this are even more important. I commend the Office Depot Foundation and the NFWL for their efforts to help children succeed by providing basic school supplies which many of us take for granted.”
The 2011 sackpacks are black and come with one of five different accent colors: purple, blue, orange, green and pink. Each sackpack has a special design logo coordinated with the accent color. Specially designed to meet the needs of students in grades K-5, the sack packs feature a top opening with vertical drawstrings on either side to close the sackpack and slip over the shoulders. Each sackpack includes a pencil pouch containing essential back-to-school items - a ruler, four crayons, a pen, a pencil, a pencil sharpener and an eraser.
Last year HPC was able to help 198 children from 88 families on the lower cape. Click here to learn more about the HPC Backpack to School program. HOMELESS PREVENTION COUNCIL SERVES 4,312 IN 2010March 30, 2011…(Orleans, MA) -The Homeless Prevention Council released its year-end report for clients served during the calendar year 2010. A total of 1,720 cases were managed by the agency, involving a total of 4, 312 individuals which includes 2,021 children. The town of Harwich had the greatest number of cases (553), followed by Brewster (406). This is a 5% increase in cases since the end of 2009. HPC Executive Director Christine Austin said the weak economy is having a toll on local families and individuals. “We are seeing people that have never had to ask for help before,” she said. “People on fixed incomes, and families who are down to one paycheck for support, are having a hard time making ends meet as costs of food and services continue to rise.”
Duplicated cases are defined as those seen for a second or multiple times to complete their case work (click here to read about case management - HPC's core program). This follow up is about one-half of the total case-load.
